Little Rock Arkansas? More like Big Rock Arkansas when Episcopal Collegiate and Elite Hoops NIKE Basketball Camps comes together over the summers. Last summer was the first round in Arkansas, but this summer the talent level jumped way up. Every player competed at a high level and pushed one another. First year camp director Micah Marsh said "Coaches and kids energy and enthusiasm was sky high all week. It is going to be hard to top this June's camp!" Maybe July's camp can make me say Huge Rock Arkansas by the end of the week.

Throughout this week, the NIKE Boys Basketball Camp at Episcopal Collegiate had exciting and great moments. Championship Friday was nothing less than inspirational for all the staffers and campers. That morning, the campers walked into the gym with an extra bounce in their step. Anyone could notice the focused and determined look in the eyes of the campers. We started off the day with living by numbers. Next we quickly jumped into our individual skills stations for a quick review. Each day the campers rotated between 3 different skill stations. Individual skills, 3on3, and video session gives helps teach all parts of the game to the campers.

Now its championship time! The first championship round was the 5on5 games. In the college division, Florida had to fight back in the semi finals to win in sudden death. After they were battle tested, Florida went on to beat undefeated Duke in the championship. The NBA and high school division championships was dominated by the league leading team. Next was our Living By Numbers Championships. With so many returning campers, there was a lot of anticipation of who will be selected. Living by Numbers (LBN) program online has been extremely beneficial to most of the campers. Lastly was the crowd favorite 3on3 Cut Throat Championship. All week the campers have been earning points and learning different ways to be successful with their teams. Coaches, players, and parents enjoyed the intensity during the 3on3 games.

NBA:

The University of Connecticut's basketball program is known for two things, winning and winning on both sides. Also known as UConn,  the program was the first in NCAA history to win both the men's and women's National Championship Title. Obliviously not an overnight success, both teams push each other by showing off elite excellence everyday. The varsity boys at GAC recently won the 2013 High School State Championship, and it will not be long before the girls team pushes the boys back. This week was the first NIKE Girls Basketball Camp at GAC, and it is the start of a beautiful basketball relationship.

Throughout this week, the NIKE Girls Basketball Camp at GAC honestly was one of the most entertaining camps I ever been apart of. On Championship Friday, the hit song "Harlem Shake" stole the show. When camp director Michelle Manfredi hit the play button, all the girls energy level went for 10 to 10,000. Anyone could notice the focused and determined look in the eyes of the campers. We started off the day with 5on5 championship games. In the WNBA division, the Dream beat the Sparks in a deciding game 5 for the championship. Baylor continued to dominate and won the college division championship. Next was our Living By Numbers Championships and individual skill improvement sessions. Lastly was the crowd favorite 3on3 Cut Throat Championship. All week the campers have been earning points and learning different ways to be successful with their teams. Coaches, players, and parents enjoyed the intensity during the 3on3 games.

Year after year, Blessed Trinity High School and Elite Hoops NIKE Basketball Camps continue to provide a great opportunity for the kids of Roswell and surrounding areas to learn the game of basketball. Since 2009, this camp has sold out with over 100 campers each summer. The future basketball players must be aware of the waiting list to get into camp, because every players played with an appreciative attitude.

Greater Atlanta Christian (GAC) has been building a championship environment over the past few years. Coach Eddie Martin and staff have been making sure that each basketball player associated with the program is playing at a high level. All the 2013 NIKE campers are now apart of the GAC family.

Championship Friday was nothing less than inspirational for all the staffers and campers. That morning, the campers walked into the gym with an extra bounce in their step. Anyone could notice the focused and determined look in the eyes of the campers. We started off the day with living by numbers. Next we quickly jumped into our individual skills stations for a quick review. Each day the campers rotated between 3 different skill stations. Individual skills, 3on3, and video session gives helps teach all parts of the game to the campers.

Now its championship time! The first championship round was the 5on5 games. In the high school and college division we had two overtime games was an exciting finish. The NBA division championship was dominated by one team. The Celtics shared the basketball and played team defensive the entire week. Next was our Living By Numbers Championships. One camper broke our previous record and was thrilled about the honor. Its my guess the player has been practicing the Living by Numbers (LBN) program online. Lastly was the crowd favorite 3on3 Cut Throat Championship. All week the campers have been earning points and learning different ways to be successful with their teams. Coaches, players, and parents enjoyed the intensity during the 3on3 games.We had some Living by Number Record Breakers this week. Another year in the books for Blessed Trinity High School and Elite Hoops NIKE Basketball Camps. This years girls camp was definitely a combination of good basketball, fun, and stylish...yes stylish! Even though our girls can play hard and tough enough with the boys, showing a sense of style is also important. On Friday, camp director Michelle Manfredi decided to asked all the campers to wear their favorite stylish socks for Crazy Sock Day. Campionship Friday was loaded with intense basketball and the wildest socks you ever seen.

Starting something new can be exciting and daunting at the same time. The excited feeling happens when you think about all the great possibilities that come from a new adventure.  On the other hand, it is easy to be nervous because of the unknown waters you are stepping into. Fortunately for Elite Hoops and NIKE Basketball Camps, the inaugural girl’s camp at Vestavia Hills is our new best friend. This week was unbelievable for the young sweet home Alabama girls. "We Got Next" was the first slogan for the newly formed Woman's National Basketball Association (WNBA) in 1997. The slogan represented the demand and responsibility for not just female basketball players, but for all female athletes period. Since the initial launch of the WNBA, more fans and supporters have climbed on board. Now there are 12 competitive teams in the WNBA with future plans on increasing. Elite Hoops Basketball has recently added more female players to the program. Michelle Manfredi, EHB Girls Director, has quickly formed several new girls basketball camps and events. This summer, EHB will have 7 NIKE Girls Basketball Camps. While the WNBA is kicking off another successful season, we will make sure we match their success. "We have NOW", new slogan for the WEHB.

The 2013 summer will be loaded with different opportunities for girls between the ages of 8-14. The NIKE Girls Basketball Camp will start in Alabama at Vestavia Hills High School in Birmingham, May 28-31. Metro Atlanta will host 4 different all girls camp at Greater Atlanta Christian, Blessed Trinity High School, St. Francis High School, and Sandy Springs United Methodist Church. Christ Presbyterian Academy in Nashville, TN will host 1 girls camp in July. Lastly, California University of Pennsylvania will be the hometown location for Michelle Manfredi. I was somewhat puzzled when thinking about this blog but with Mother's Day approaching I figured this would be a great subject to write about.  We had our first round of staff interviews the other night and one of the questions I asked was... "Who do you look up to most?"  I had a lot of great answers and I had quite a few that said their mom.  When I was asked that same question, my immediate response was "my mom." 

Along with today's playset, I would like to share one of my personal basketball terms named looper. The definition of a looper is someone that can weave in and out of traffic on the basketball court. Any open area to recieve the basketball, a looper will find that spot. Another commonly used basketball term that is similar to a looper is a slasher. Dwayne Wade, James Harden, and Manu Ginobili are some of the best loopers or slashers in the NBA. With or without the basketball, each of them can slip between any crack of the defense and find a way to score.

If the game of basketball had a mascot, it would be a pine tree. Why you ask? The history of basketball proves that pine wood played a major role in the development of the great sport. In the beginning, pine wood was commonly used for basketball courts and bleachers. The phrase "ride the pine" for players that did not get a chance to play, originated from the pine wood made benches. Now different wood and materials are used for courts and seating, but Elite Hoops decided to keep the pine wood tradition alive. This summer, the 4th annual NIKE Basketball Camp will be in Cumming, Ga at Piney Grove Middle School. The coincidentally named middle school has sold out each of the previous 3 summers. Camp will have a combination of old school work ethic with a new school style.

The Peach State! For those that do not reside in Georgia, and/or is unfamiliar with the state, yes the peach represents the people of Georgia very well. The soft and juicy outside texture of a peach speaks for all kind hearted southerners. Do not be fooled, when you get down to the hard center of a peach you realize that the people are the same. Being mentally and physically tough in Georgia is very important, and those qualities attracted us to the appropriately named Peachtree City. Since 2010, Kedron Fieldhouse in Peachtree City has been one of the NIKE Basketball Camp locations. This summer, we invite the entire Peach State to test your inner peach.
