Day 3 of NIKE Camp at Madison Academy!

Posted by Chris Langley | Thursday, June 2, 2011 | Category: , , | 0 comments

On Day 3 at the NIKE/Elite Hoops Basketball Camp at Madison Academy, coaches emphasized using the skills that players were taught in stations in 5 on 5 and 3 on 3 games. One important skill that was taught in stations was the PICK AND ROLL. Players were taught the importance of moving without the basketball, whether it was setting up a defender before a pick or rolling to the basket after setting a screen. After working on this skill in stations, coaches encouraged players to move without the basketball and set screens to get teammates open! In the video below, some of our players demonstrate how the execute the pick and roll.

Day 3 of the NIKE Camp at Miller Grove

Kicking off to a great start this morning many of the coaches focused on the fundamentals of shooting. To further emphasize how important your shot is in a game,  the coaches had a battle known as the Coaches Shoot Out amongst each other. Two  teams, the Rookies and the Veterans. After taking multiple shots in various locations around the court the coaches competed to see who could make more shots... The young and the fast or the old and the experienced. After an epic war on the court the Rookies managed to pull through as our winners. Before the start of the competition the campers were told to predict who would win and run to which team they choose. The campers then got a chance to participate as the Veterans paid the consequences of their loss.
The nail-biting Living By Numbers competition only heated things up even more as the campers were introduced to three more drills. One camper, Ashton Mason, says of the drills, "They were brutal, but I love it!" Looks like somebody is focused on getting one percent better each day!

Day 2 of NIKE Camp at Madison Academy- DEFENSE!

Posted by Chris Langley | Wednesday, June 1, 2011 | Category: , , | 0 comments

On day 2 of our NIKE/Elite Hoops Basketball Camp at Madison Academy, the emphasis was the importance of team defense. Team defense is dependent on the ability of players to communicate with one another while also being in proper position on the court. The 3 key terms coaches emphasized were "ball, help, and deny." Players did their best to try to use the things they learned at the team defense station in their 5 on 5 and 3 on 3 games, and the defense definitely improved! Below is a video of Coach Johnson explaining to campers the proper defensive position.

Miller Grove High School: Day Two Comes to a Close

Posted by Anonymous | | Category: , , | 0 comments

As day two winds down we have made great strides here at Miller Grove. With all of the campers coming in this morning excited and ready to play the station drills started out at full force. The coaches main focus today was ball handling as they work towards better "Living By Numbers" standings with their campers. Our own Justin Thornton broke the High School record for the figure 8 drill today and his teammates cheered him on.
After our lunch period we had a few words with Coach Anderson, who has worked many different NIKE Elite Hoops Camps in the past. Coach Anderson says that "seeing them excited about each other's victories is my favorite part of working with the campers, and I got to see that today."
Moving further into the second half of day two the campers had a chance to free shoot, which is Coach Anderson's favorite part of the camp day, "You get to see them in an unstructured environment that grows more and more structured as the camp week continues. You really get to see the difference your making in these kid's games." When asked what he most looks forward to come the end of the week, the inevitable
"CHAMPIONSHIP FRIDAY!" was the answer. "You never know what its going to bring," he said enthusiastically.
As day two winds down the campers grow more and more confident of their own skills, as well as their teammates. Everybody is looking forward to what'll happen next here at Miller Grove!

Day 1 of NIKE Camp at Madison Academy

Posted by Chris Langley | Tuesday, May 31, 2011 | Category: , , | 0 comments

At our first annual NIKE/Elite Hoops Boys Basketball camp at Madison Academy, coaches emphasized the importance of "not mistaking activity for achievement." Players were told that just because they were at camp, in a station, or even playing 5 on 5, they were not going to achieve anything (or get better) if they weren't giving their full effort!

This applies to any aspect of their game, whether it is ballhandling, rebounding, shooting, or defense. A player must go game speed to get better, and eventually perform better in games. The goal is to help players develop this type of work ethic outside of camp when working by themselves in the off-season.

If players continue to work as hard the rest of the week as they did in their stations, 5 on 5, Living by Numbers, and 3 on 3, as they did on the first day, then they should see tremendous improvement by Friday afternoon! The coaches are excited to see what's in store for this talented and hard working group!

NIKE Boys Basketball Camp at Miller Grove: Day One.

The NIKE Elite Hoops Boys Basketball Camp at Miller Grove kicked off this morning at full speed. After registration, campers were introduced to the Skill Development Stations for 2 hours.  Our Skills Stations focus on each players basic fundamentals and push them out of their comfort zone. Coach Cason emphasized how "tough the defensive station is for most campers," but he is confident that they will get one percent better each day.

After campers played their five on five games they then took on a more competitive aspect of camp: Living By Numbers. As the kids watched demonstrations of the coaches doing these drills, they cheered them on as they attempted to break kids records from previous camps.

"Switch Cone Slides," a new drill this year, our camper, Xzavier Duggan, broke our last weeks camp record by moving 13 cones in 30 seconds.

From the looks of things, these kids have a lot more in store for us this week. The question is will anyone else break a record?

NIKE Camp at OCHS Finishes Strong!

Posted by Chris Langley | Friday, May 27, 2011 | Category: , , , | 0 comments

Championship Friday, was exciting for players, coaches and parents! Players received their NIKE camp t-shirts and prizes for Living by Numbers events, coaches evaluation, and also competed in front of parents and coaches in their 5 on 5 championship games!

5 on 5 championship games were competitive in all leagues, with all three games decided in the last minute of play, with players stepping up and making huge plays! Players proved that all their hard work in stations, 5 on 5, and 3 on 3 throughout the week paid off!

The other coaches and I could not be any happier with their effort. Hopefully, players will continue to work as hard the rest of the summer, as they did during camp this week!

Check out the videos below of players working on fundamentals during their 3 on 3 games!

In this video, our NBA division players, Jessie Michael, Brice Whited, and Chase Major work the ball around to get a layup. Notice how they communicate with one another, and catch the ball each time in triple threat. This is exactly what we expect from players during our 3 on 3 games!

In this video, our College division players, Carter Huckaby, Nicky Pu, and Cole Fitzpatrick, work the ball around to get an open layup, rebound, and finish with a put back!

Second Day of NIKE Basketball Camp at OCHS

Posted by Chris Langley | Tuesday, May 24, 2011 | Category: , , | 0 comments

On the second day of the NIKE Basketball Camp at OCHS, players were pushed to use the skills that they learned in their stations in their 5 on 5 games . One skill that was highlighted in today's stations was communicating on defense, saying "ball, deny, or help." Although a new skill for most players, communication on defense is one of the most important things for players who want to play at a higher level, so coaches made sure that players were constantly talking during 5 on 5 games.

A player doesn't have to be the best offensive player to find playing time on a team. Playing time can also be found on the defensive end of the court. Any player can play defense! If players focus on proper technique and communication, they will always have a spot on any team. Coaches love smart defensive players, and are always looking for someone to be a leader on the defensive end.

We will continually reinforce these good defensive habits throughout the week, so players learn to implement them in their upcoming fall seasons.

Day 2 was a success!

First Day of NIKE Basketball Camp at OCHS

Posted by Chris Langley | Monday, May 23, 2011 | Category: , , | 0 comments

The inaugural NIKE Basketball Camp at OCHS, opened on Monday empahasizing the importance of the fundamentals. Players were introduced to individual skills drills that they should work on daily, if they are truly serious about developing a well-rounded skill set. The one drill highlighting this emphasis on fundamental skill development was the "Mikan Drill." The Mikan Drill is a simple layup drill that focuses on technique and proper layup form. Players were to make sure to have their "right hand, right knee in the air" on a right-handed layup and to make sure to have their "left hand, left knee in the air" on a left-handed layup. Beginning players were encouraged to work on form over speed, while more advanced players were pushed to develop quicker foot work in between layups.

As the week continues, coaches will emphasize the fundamentals, but move towards more advanced moves during stations. This is all part of our attempt to make sure that players improve by 1% daily!

3-Step Training Approach

Posted by Lee Miller | Thursday, March 24, 2011 | Category: , , | 0 comments

We train middle school, high school and collegiate players 10 months out of the year.  However, we train players differently in each of the three basketball seasons: In-Season, Pre-Season,  and Post-Season.  Most players tend to train the same way all year long.  Is that wrong? No. Anytime a player commits to training they are going to get better, but we think there is a systematic approach to improving your game different ways throughout the year.

In-Season (November-February), we perform "Maintenance" workouts where we focus on getting lots of individual repetitions for our trainees.   Most teams and coaches are working on team development in these months-ie, installing a new offense, out of bounds plays, full court presses, etc. and most players on the middle school and high school level do not get the quantity of individual reps needed.  I'm sure you've heard it before, but "teams are made October through March and players are made March to October." That is why during the season we don't "make" players, just maintain them.

Once the regular season is complete we move our workouts to "Growth" sessions (March-May). During this time of year, we really look to expand each players game both offensively and defensively.  On the offensive end, we strive to add 2-3 moves to each players arsenal (see two of our moves to the right), work on their first step quickness, elevate their shooting percentage/range and also improve their ballhandling speed. On the defensive end, we look to improve their first step cutoff, lateral quickness and body positioning.

During the pre-season (August-October), our workouts are "Performance" based sessions.  These sessions are a combination of of Maintenance and Growth sessions, but with the addition of statistically tracking players shooting percentages, ball speed, repetitions, quickness, etc.  This allows players to truly see progress in their game as they prepare for the season to begin.

Big East vs. ACC

Posted by Tysor Driesell Anderson | | Category: , , | 0 comments

Every year we seem to have the debate over which conference is the best in college basketball. This year the consensus has been that the Big East was the best conference in the country. Its a trap that is easy to fall into: mistaking the biggest conference for the best conference. With 16 teams the Big East is more like an association than a conference. It is a good league with some big name coaches and schools in some big market cities: New York, Philadelphia, Chicago. But the Big East lacks one major variable that a league must have to be the best....the best players.

I grew up in a basketball family with a legendary college coach for a granddad and he always says, "It don't matter how good a coach you are, you ain't going to win any games if you ain't got great players." Well the Big East hasn't won many games so far in this years NCAA tournament and that's in large part because they haven't got great players. As a former ACC player I know where the best players in the country are and that's in the ACC. I was not one of those players that makes the ACC great but I had to see them every night for 4 years and it is a different brand of basketball than anywhere else in the country.

The Big East set a record this year with 11 teams recieving bids to the NCAA tournament. The ACC got 4 bids while 2 teams, Virginia Tech and Boston College, sat anxiously on the bubble only to find out they were playing in the NIT. After 68 has been whittled down to 16, the Big East has 2 teams remaining from their original 11 (Connecticut and Marquette) and both of those teams beat other Big East teams to advance to the Sweet 16. The ACC has a 7-1 record so far in the tournament and has 3 remaining teams from their original 4 (Duke, UNC, Florida State). Now I realize that March is a crazy time and if the ball bounces a different way or the whistle blows at a different time then things could have been a bit different but the atroscious opening weekend for the Big East was capped off with a dominating performance by a beat up, middle of the ACC pack Florida State team over a premier Big East team, Notre Dame. The FSU vs. Notre Dame game embodied some major differences in the 2 conferences. FSU physically dominated the Irish from start to finish. They were swarming on defense, quicker on offense, and brutally pounded Notre Dame holding them to nearly 20 points below their season average.

Playing in the ACC I can tell you we were never once physically intimidated by a school outside our conference. That includes playing teams like Kansas, Connecticut, Ohio State, Memphis, Indiana, USC, Oklahoma State, UNLV etc. We weren't physically intimidated because we played against teams every night, in the ACC, that had better athletes, stronger defenders, and played a more physical style of basketball.

The evidence that the ACC is the best conference in America lies in 2 telling factors: the style of play teams build reputations for playing.....and NBA players.

The ACC is known for having physical defensive teams. Duke, North Carolina, Florida State, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Wake Forrest are all teams with defensive reputations. The Big East has 3 maybe 4 teams with that reputation (Louisville, Pitt, Cincinnati, and Villanova as the maybe). But neither of those teams has the calibar of athletes that the ACC has. Just look at the players in the NBA.

There are more ACC players in the NBA (56) than any other conference. I won't take the time to name them but go ahead and check out some NBA rosters and see where guys played in college. You'll see where the best league in the world gets most of their talent. As we know, "You ain't going to win without great players," and the ACC has those players.
