NIKE Coed Basketball Camp: Championship Friday at Vestavia Hills

Posted by Anonymous | Monday, June 1, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

The first week of camps for the summer always tend to come with some pre-camp jitters. The coaches are working hard to prove their skills and exciting new position on the NIKE Elite Hoops staff. The campers work hard and prove their dedication to the game of basketball by spending their first week of their summer break in the gym improving their game. Now that is what we call a true athlete! And of course, we can't forget our parents who worked hard getting their kids to camp on time everyday!  This first camp at Vestavia Hills High School was so GREAT that we may just have to say this has been the best first camp of the season yet. These players surely knew how to start this summer, and set the standards extremely high. Until 2016 Vestavia! Keep working hard!

Throughout this week, the NIKE Coed Basketball Camp at Vestavia Hills High School had exciting and great moments. Championship Friday was nothing less than inspirational for all the staffers and campers. That morning, the campers walked into the gym with an extra bounce in their step. Anyone could notice the focused and determined look in the eyes of the campers. We started off the day with living by numbers. Next we quickly jumped into our individual skills stations for a quick review. Each day the campers rotated between 3 different skill stations. Individual skills, 3on3, and video session gives helps teach all parts of the game to the campers.

Now its championship time! The first championship round was the 5on5 games.  The NBA and high school division championships was balanced throughout the week. Next was our Living By Numbers Championships. With so many returning campers, there was a lot of anticipation of who will be selected. Living by Numbers (LBN) program online has been extremely beneficial to most of the campers. Lastly the crowd favorite was 3on3 Cut Throat Championship. All week the campers have been earning points and learning different ways to be successful with their teams. Coaches, players, and parents enjoyed the intensity during the 3on3 games.

Championship Friday ended with our NIKE Awards Ceremony. All the campers received camp T-shirts, workbooks, players evaluations, and various fun prizes. Below is the list of LBN winners and the photos of the individual winners. We are sad the camp ended today, but we are more excited about the improvement of all the campers. See you next summer Vestavia!

Something exciting happened this week at Vestavia! Check out Elizabeth Hill as she breaks the current 2 Ball Power Dribble Living By Numbers record. She set the new record for the WNBA Division with a total of 180 dribbles.

NIKE Boys Basketball Camp: Championship Friday at Pinecrest June

Posted by Anonymous | | Category: | 0 comments

As the first camp of the summer, and the first  camp to ever be held at Pinecrest Academy, we have all agreed that every aspect of the camp was the best way to start the summer and bring in a new NIKE Elite Hoops Basketball Camp Location. The campers truly showed us hard work all week, and their dedication to the game of basketball was very clear because they decided to spend their very first week of summer break with us in the gym. We are extremely happy with how it turned out, and the amount of hard work the campers gave and brought each and every day. We can't wait to see you again next summer at Pinecrest Academy!

Elite Hoops Playset: Warriors

Posted by Anonymous | Thursday, May 7, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

The top ranked team in the Western Conference of the NBA is the Golden St Warriors. Their high level of talent and sharp shooters from the perimeter make them one of the most liked and entertaining teams to watch in the NBA. Because they are such a fast paced team, the Warriors half court sets are short but effective. Below is a set Kerr has used multiple times in the playoffs.

Play starts in a box set with P1 dribbling to the wing and P3 coming off of the zipper cut. When P1 passes the ball to P3 he sprints off a fake dribble handoff. P5 then turns and sets a screen for P2 looking for a shot off of the baseline curl.

Elite Hoops Playset: Clippers

Posted by Anonymous | Wednesday, April 29, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

Even though the Clippers run ball screens with Chris Paul 90% and continue to let us down in crunch time, every now and then they draw up a set that is not all that bad. Many of the plays that are designed for this team cannot be run by many others because they do not have Blake Griffin, who can dunk off of one step from the free throw line, and Deandre Jordan, who can catch a lob at the top of the square off vert. Athleticism like this gives the Clippers the ability to be creative with how they attack the rim.

This play starts with the zipper cut by P1. P3 then sprints to the corner while P4 and P5 run to set a ball screen. P1 dribbles off of P5 for a pick and roll. If lob is not there, ball is reversed to P2 for another pick and roll action from the wing while P1 and P3 spot up on the weak side.

Elite Hoops Playset: Dribble Drag

Posted by Anonymous | Tuesday, April 21, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

With AAU season underway coaches from all age groups are looking for quick hitters that take little practice and is simple for the players to learn. This set is often used in transition by many college teams looking for a quick bucket but can also be used as a half court set.

"Dribble Drag" starts in a 4 out 1 in set with P1 giving a dribbling to the corner for a dribble handoff with P3. P5 then sprints into a ballscreen with P3 while P4 sets a down screen for P2. P3 then has the option to pass to P5 rolling, P1 replacing, or P2 cutting off of the downscreen.

Elite Hoops Playset: Spurs

Posted by Anonymous | Friday, April 17, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

The San Antonio Spurs are arguably the best team in the NBA every year. This is not because of talent, youth, or athleticism but more because of the unselfish, heart, and determination. They are hands down the best passing team in the game and they do not let egos keep them from reaching success. Below is a unique play designed by the Spurs that has been used during the past couple of weeks.

This play starts in a high 1-4 set with P1 dribbling to the wing and P3 running the zipper cut action while P4 and P2 drop to the baseline. P1 then passes the ball to P2. At this moment P3 drives hard right while P1 and P2 both come off of backscreens. If nothing has opened up a staggered screen is set for P1 running the baseline.

Elite Hoops Playset: UCONN

Posted by Anonymous | Friday, April 10, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

It's pretty safe to say that UConn's Women's basketball program is the most dominant and consistent team in the nation year in and year out. They have a very strong level of talent at all positions of the floor allowing them to run a wide variety of plays to get players the ball in many different places. "Chin" is one of the plays that was used in the national championship game to help UConn defeat Notre Dame.

"Chin" starts with P1 passing the ball to P2 and sprinting off of a UCLA cut. P2 then passes to P5 popping to the top then sets a downscreen for P1 on the block. P5 passes the ball back to P1 on the wing then follows with a ball screen. When P1 dribbles off of the ball screen P5 runs off of a backscreen set by P2 and rolls to the basket.

Elite Hoops Playset: Gonzaga

Posted by Anonymous | Tuesday, March 31, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

One of the best teams out west and number 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament Gonzaga has excelled above and beyond expectations. To go along with a skilled group of players, they have designed a number of sets that takes advantage of their size along with their strong perimeter shooting. The set below is a go to that has earned Gonzaga point after point throughout the season.

This play begins with P1 dribbling to the wing and P3 curling off of a staggered screen for some misdirection. P1 then hits P3 while P4 sprints into a ball screen. At this moment, P3 has the option to drive, pull up, kick to the corner or pass back to P4 for a high low. If all of these options are taken away, P2 sets a cross screen for P5 for a post isolation.

Elite Hoops Playset: UNI

Posted by Anonymous | Tuesday, March 24, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

People always wonder how teams like Northern Iowa, Butler, Utah, and Wichita St are able to compete and be so successful against high level competition. After watching this set by Northern Iowa in the tournament, it is easy to see why. This play may be simple but it makes defenders rotate in a way they are not used to rotating or ever practicing. Because of this, easy points are gained throughout the game and these teams are hard to guard.

This play begins in a high 1-4 set with P1 feeding the high post. P2 then backdoor cuts while P1 replaces. While P2 back doors, P5 sets a flare screen to free P2 and P3 flashes to the top of the key. The ball is then skipped to P2 for an open shot or a dump down pass to P5.

Elite Hoops Playset: D2 Elevator

Posted by Anonymous | Tuesday, March 3, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

With lower level athletes on different levels of basketball, coaches have to find ways to create shots for players that are not able to do so alone. Many Division II teams have a couple players that can knock down the 3 but are unable to show their talents because their shot is too slow or they are never in the correct position to shoot. "D2 Elevator" is the perfect play to solve these issues for a high percentage shooter.

"D2 Elevator" begins with P1 passing to the wing and setting a pin screen for P5 to post. P4, P5, and P1 then pop to the perimeter while the ball is swung twice to P2. P3 immediately sprints to the middle of the paint. While the dribble handoff is happening with P1 and P2, P3 is running through a double screen from the two bigs looking for space to shoot a 3.

Elite Hoops Playset: Waggle

Posted by Anonymous | Wednesday, February 25, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

As players have developed over the years, so has the ball screen offense. Recent coaches on all levels of the game have figured out ways to get their best ball handlers the opportunity to make plays off a ball screen while the players without the ball can float to spots they feel comfortable. In "Waggle" the off guard gets to come off of a ball screen and have the entire side of the floor available to make a play.

"Waggle" starts in a box set with P2 cutting to the wing to receive the ball. P4 then turns and sets a screen for P3 to go to the wing. Next, P5 sets a ball screen on the baseline side for P2 while P3 sets a flare for P1 to the corner. If nothing has opened up, P4 sets a backscreen for P3 looking for a layup.

Elite Hoops Playset: Zipper Ball Screen

Posted by Anonymous | Wednesday, February 18, 2015 | Category: | 0 comments

Sometimes quick hitters are needed in the game of basketball. The long, complicated plays are great and memorized if practiced regularly but if a team has scouted and prepared then what happens next? "Zipper Ball Screen" is a set used by many teams late or sometimes even early in the shot clock to give players the opportunity to make something happen and play to their strengths.

Zipper Ball Screen begins in a box set with P1 dribbling to the wing. P4 then sets a down screen for P2 popping to the 3pt line lane line extended. P5 then sprints to set a ball screen before coming off of a backscreen set by P4. P1 now has the option to pass to 3 different shooters, pull up for a mid range jumper, or hit P5 rolling to the basket for a layup.
